World Languages, 7-12
French
Students must major in French (the French and Francophone literature track is recommended). Romance Languages majors studying French as a first language and who have strong French language skills and a recommendation from the French Department may apply to enroll. We strongly recommend that students study abroad or participate in a summer language immersion program.
Latin
Students must major in Latin. Study abroad at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome is strongly recommended.
Spanish
Students must major in Spanish. Romance Languages majors studying Spanish as a first language and who have strong Spanish language skills and a recommendation from the Spanish Department may apply to enroll. We strongly recommend that students study abroad.
Pursuit of certification in the following languages is also possible but subject to availability of student teaching placements:
Chinese
Students must complete an independent major in Chinese. The major must include 10 Chinese courses, including third year Chinese, at least two advanced Chinese courses, Linguistics H282 (Structure of Chinese), and a fall thesis. Study abroad or participation in a summer language immersion program is strongly recommended.
Russian
Students must major in Russian, taking two Russian language courses at the 200 level or above, such as 201 and 202, 235, 321, 342, 365, 380, 390, 391, and 398 or 399. We strongly recommend studying abroad in Russia or participating in a summer language immersion program.
