Performance Opportunities
Dance Ensembles
Dance Ensembles are offered in modern, ballet, jazz, African diasporic dance, and hip-hop and are open to students through auditions conducted by the choreographer at the beginning of each semester. The works created by dance faculty and guest choreographers, along with periodic reconstructions from historic repertories, are performed in the annual Spring Dance Concert in Goodhart Theater.
Guest choreographers in the last several years have included Tammy Carrasco, Joe Gonzalez, Rebecca Malcolm-Naib, Melanie Cotton, Lauren Putty White, Olive Prince, Meredith Rainey, Peaches Jones, Shannon Murphy, Katherine Kiefer Stark, Nia Eubanks-Dixon, Colby Damon, Megan Mazarick, and Felicia Cruz.
Student dancers have also performed in authorized reconstructions of Alwin Nikolais' Tensile Involvement, José Limón's Concerto Grosso, Waldstein Sonata, and Psalm as well as Martha Graham's Steps in the Street and excerpts from Trisha Brown's Lineup and Solo Olos, and in both the Parsons Etude and the Buraczeski Etude through the Repertory Etudes Collection.
School Performance Project
The School Performance Project is a community-focused project, led by Program Director Madeline Cantor, which visits 1,000 to 1,500 children every year in Philadelphia area schools, with a program of original choreography, commissioned music, and vivid costumes.
Advanced Choreography
Advanced Choreography is a semester-long tutorial in which a student develops a work of significant length using selected students as dancers in the work. Advanced choreography works are generally presented in a studio performance.
Senior Projects
Senior dance majors have the option to create a substantial choreographic project as a senior capstone event. They work with a Dance Program faculty mentor and often invite other 91´«Ã½ and Haverford students to take part in the project.
Extra-Curricular Groups
In addition to the Dance Program's credit-earning courses taught by professional instructors and artists, there are extra-curricular dance groups led by students. For more information, go to the Student Activities/Clubs page and check under the 'Music and Performing Arts' or the 'Special Interests' headings for information on groups that are currently active.
