Dr. Kross doesn’t flinch when confronting our psychological unrest. As the Director of the University of Michigan Emotion and Self-Control Lab, he poses a refreshing set of questions: what are emotions, why do they matter, and how can we harness them using tools we already possess? Our feelings act as our internal immune system, alerting us to our surroundings and guiding our responses—but only if we know how to optimally deploy them. Drawing from groundbreaking research, much of it performed in his own lab, alongside the powerful tales of people—from a mother whose fearful instincts saved her daughter’s life mid-flight to a nuclear code-carrying Navy SEAL who learned how to embrace elation and agony during his grueling training—Dr. Kross reveals stories and strategies to support emotion regulation.
