Supplemental Summer Support
The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) offers Supplemental Summer Research Fellowships (SSRF) and additional Research Assistantships (RA) to provide enhanced support for graduate students pursuing their academic endeavors during the summer months.
Who may apply?
- SSRF: All continuing students who receive a Fellowship, Teaching Assistantship, or Graduate Assistantship during this academic year may apply for SSRF ( $5,000 allocated to most applicants for Summer 2024) to support their research and academic activities, such as conducting research activities toward their degree, taking a language course required by their graduate program, participating in a fieldwork project, and presenting research at a conference.
- RA: Continuing students who assist in faculty research activities and/or undergraduate student research mentoring may apply for RA support (3,000 allocated to most applicants for Summer 2024) in addition to SSRF.
- Not eligible to apply:鈥疭tudents who will not return to Bryn鈥疢awr鈥痜or Fall 2024鈥痑s a current, actively enrolled student.
How do I apply?
If you are interested in applying for SSRF and/or RA, please complete the by March 15, 2024.
- The SSRF application requires a PDF file of a 250-word essay with the signature of the faculty member who approved the application. The essay should describe summer research and/or academic projects to be supported, providing information on academic goals, planned activities with a timeline, and the impacts of the proposed projects on academic progress toward the degree. Additionally, if summer plans include conferences, fieldwork, or summer courses, proof of acceptance and a travel plan with a budget breakdown should be provided as supporting materials.
- The RA application requires a PDF file of a 250-word essay signed by the RA supervisor. The essay should provide the RA job description, estimated weekly working hours to assist faculty research activities and/or undergraduate student research mentoring (up to 20 hours per week), and estimated total RA working hours for the summer (up to 120 hours).
When will the funding decision be announced?
All requests will be reviewed by the Dean of Graduate Studies in consultation with the graduate departments, as necessary. Applicants will be notified of the funding decision by April 19, 2024.
Requirements for funding receivers:
Students who receive SSRF and/or RA are required to
- participate in a 2-hour Summer Research Orientation at the beginning of May 2024 (agenda and date below) ,
- submit a summer research report (~500 words) by August 15, 2024, and
- present their research achievements in either a 3-minute lightning speech or a digital poster to the GSAS community at the Welcome-Back Picnic in Fall 2024.
